Chiropractic Body Adjustments

Originating from the Greek, the profession combines “cheir” (hand) and “praxis” (action) to make the word chiropractic, or “done by hand”. Classified as a complementary alternative medicine, it focuses on the manipulation of your musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. In the words of chiropractic’s founder, it’s the “science of healing without drugs”. The discipline of chiropractic focuses on the correct diagnosis and resolution of mechanical bone disorders, primarily in the spine. Give us a call to schedule your same-day appointment.

Where does chiropractic care originate?

Chiropractic dates back to 1895 with the founding of modern chiropractic attributed to Daniel David Palmer.

His discovery came after hypothesizing that an ‘out of alignment’ vertebra was pinching a nerve that has resulted in the client’s near-complete loss of hearing. With a small adjustment, the vertebra was realigned, and the client’s hearing was restored. Since then, chiropractic has grown to become one of the largest and best recognized natural healthcare interventions. It offers a safe, non-invasive alternative to medication and surgery.

What is included in chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a holistic, natural approach to wellness and health primarily through hands-on care. The focus is on full-body restoration, preservation and optimization. It’s a completely different approach to traditional medical interventions that turn to surgery and drugs to minimize symptoms. Instead, chiropractic works to optimize health following a non-invasive approach that targets and treats the root causes.

What are chiropractic body adjustments?

Chiropractic is rooted in the adjustment of the spine and the body’s musculoskeletal system. When joints move out of their correct position, it has a profound effect on the surrounding tissues and nerves. Chiropractic care seeks to respond to this through the manual repositioning of the joints, known as ‘adjustments’.

You may have heard reference to subluxation. This is when one or more bones in the spine (your vertebrae) move out of their proper position, creating pressure on the spinal nerves. Your nervous system is responsible for controlling a number of functions throughout the body, so if it’s not performing optimally, you may notice pain and discomfort, along with other more serious symptoms.

A chiropractor will locate the subluxations, then work to reduce or correct them through a series of adjustments to restore proper alignment and nerve flow.

Is there a scientific basis for chiropractic therapy?

The practise of chiropractic is growing throughout the world as patients discover the health-giving benefits of this completely natural therapy for themselves. The body of evidence supporting chiropractic medicine is also growing, with several large studies showing the correlation between chiropractic care and pain relief for a number of acute and chronic conditions. Chiropractic treatment is considered clinically effective, cost-effective and safe, supporting the discipline’s natural, whole-body approach.

The most important studies show:

  • Clients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than medical care
  • Chiropractic leads to better patient outcomes
  • Chiropractic can reduce lower back pain (and is recommended by the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society)
  • It also helps with neck pain, soft tissue conditions, pregnancy-related pelvic pain, and headaches.
